Top-ranked Australian lays down marker with strong International Series debut

PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit runner up Cameron John has made an emphatic start to life on The International Series, as the in-form Australian sets his sights on LIV Golf, and a dream appearance at the League’s blockbuster Adelaide stop.

Fresh off his remarkable campaign at home, the Melbourne-based talent has carried that momentum into International Series Japan, comfortably making the cut and moving into the top 15 after rounds of 69 and 68. His second round was sparked by a stunning hole-out eagle on the par-4 first, his 10th hole of the day.

“I had a good number, hit a really nice shot, and it landed perfectly and disappeared, it was a great way to get the round going,” he said. “It definitely gives you a boost, but I tried to refocus straight away. I hit a lot of good shots after that, just didn’t convert as many chances as I would’ve liked. But overall, I gave myself plenty of opportunities.”

With ties to fellow Australians already competing on LIV Golf, including 2026 LIV Golf Riyadh winner Elvis Smylie and Marc Leishman, John has a clear target in sight as he builds his schedule around The International Series pathway.

“Definitely, that’s something I’m targeting,” he said of earning a place on the LIV Golf League. “It would be incredibly exciting. I’ve got friends out there and it looks like a great environment.

“I’m pretty close with a few of the Aussie guys from Ripper GC, I know Elvis Smylie well, and I’ve spent some time with Marc Leishman. We share the same coach, so I’ve been able to learn a lot just from being around him, which has been really valuable. And of course, Lucas Herbert, who won here last year, is another great example of what’s possible.”

The prospect of competing on home soil at LIV Golf Adelaide, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying stops on the League, adds further motivation for the rising Australian.

“That would be pretty special,” he said. “To be part of something like that, especially in front of Australian fans, is something I’d love to experience.”

An outstanding amateur career laid the foundation for John’s rise, including victory at the Australian Junior Championship at 17 and the Victorian Amateur, alongside international success at the Scottish Strokeplay. Now, he is embracing the opportunity to step onto a bigger stage.

“I’m really enjoying this week in Japan,” he said of his first International Series appearance. “I’d love to play as many of these as I can. It’s great to come over here and experience something different.”

His strong finish in Australasian Tour has already opened doors, with invitations secured for upcoming events as he looks to build a global schedule.

“I finished second on the Order of Merit, so that’s created a few opportunities,” he said. “I’ll be playing in Singapore and hopefully a number of International Series events, still working through the schedule, but that’s the plan.”
