Australian star duo draw inspiration from countrymen’s success ahead of Singapore Open

Australian stars Wade Ormsby and Jed Morgan arrive at this week’s Singapore Open presented by The Business Times lifted by the recent success of their compatriots on the global stage, as they prepare for a high-stakes week at Sentosa Golf Club from 23–26 April, where two places into The 154th Open are also on offer.

Ormsby, a multiple winner on The International Series with victories at International Series Thailand in 2023 and the Jakarta International Championship in 2025, arrives in Singapore fresh off a tied-12th finish at the season opener in Japan.

The experienced Australian also returns with valuable course familiarity after stepping in for HyFlyers GC captain Phil Mickelson across three LIV Golf events in Adelaide, Hong Kong, and Singapore earlier this year — with the latter played at the same venue hosting this week’s tournament.

“It definitely helps having played here [Sentosa Golf Club] in tournament conditions,” said Ormsby. “You know the greens, pin positions, and where you can and can’t miss it, so you can focus more on playing the course. That’s a big advantage this week.”

Looking at the broader Australian golf landscape, Ormsby is encouraged by the recent performances of his compatriots on both The International Series and the LIV Golf League, including Travis Smyth and Elvis Smylie.

“When you see fellow countrymen winning, it definitely spurs everyone on,” he said. “Travis has been playing really well this year, I was in the final group with him in New Zealand, and he played great there. He finished fifth but could easily have done better, then went on to win the following week. Elvis is a great player too.

“It gives you belief and makes you want to be in that position. Hopefully I can get my name back among the winners.”

Former Ripper GC member Jed Morgan echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the strength and depth of Australian golf across both LIV Golf and The International Series.

“There are a lot of very good players coming through to compete internationally, and that’s a really positive sign for the sport,” said Morgan. “Australian golf is in a really strong place, and I’d love to see more events like this back home. Golf is really thriving there at the moment.”

Looking ahead, Ormsby remains focused on the bigger picture as he targets a full season on The International Series.

“The main goal is to win on The International Series,” he said. “All the events are highly valued, and I’d also love to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit. Hopefully I can earn my way into a Major through this or other events.”

With two Open Championship spots on offer this week, Ormsby welcomed the added incentive, without shifting his approach.

“It’s more of an incentive, not added pressure,” he said. “It’s about putting yourself in position and seeing if you can handle it.”

The Singapore Open presented by The Business Times marks the second stop of the 2026 International Series calendar, offering not only a pathway to the LIV Golf League through the season-long Rankings, but also direct qualification opportunities into the Major championships.
